MUMBAI: A police officer, Shyamcharan Gawade, sustained head injuries and a fractured shoulder when a speeding scooter rammed into iron barricade in Mumbai’s Andheri area.
Deepesh Khajekar, who was intoxicated and accompanied by two pillion riders, was apprehended by the Andheri police.
One of the pillion riders, Pandit Patil, fled the scene upon realizing the officer’s injury.
The incident occurred near JB Nagar Metro Station around 2.05am, where Gawade was on night duty. Despite signals to stop, the scooterists hit the barricade, injuring Gawade, who is now stable in Trauma Care Hospital, Jogeshwari. Gawade’s surgery for the fractured shoulder is scheduled for Thursday evening.
During the arrest, Khajekar failed to produce a driving license and tested positive for alcohol in a breathalyzer test. The police team, including sub-inspector Rego, took Khajekar and one pillion rider, Pratik Yadav, to Andheri police station for further inquiry. The second pillion rider, Pandit Patil, remains at large.
The incident unfolded as traffic police signaled the scooterists to stop, but they attempted to flee, colliding with the barricade and injuring Gawade.
