Chenab Rail Bridge: Watch the world’s highest railway bridge in action

The Indian Railways has marked a significant milestone with the successful trial run on the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge. This engineering marvel connects Sangaldan in Ramban district to Reasi, symbolising a monumental achievement in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project. Standing at a staggering 359 metres above the riverbed, the Chenab Rail Bridge surpasses even the Eiffel Tower by 35 metres.

The project has faced numerous challenges since its inception in 1997, primarily due to the complex geological and topographical conditions of the region. Spanning a total of 272 kilometres, the USBRL project has seen 209 kilometres commissioned in phases, overcoming immense difficulties to link Kashmir with the rest of India by rail. The final stretch of 17 kilometres between Reasi and Katra is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year, marking the end of a long and arduous journey.

The Chenab Rail Bridge not only stands as a testament to technical excellence but also represents a significant step towards enhancing connectivity in the region.

Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the successful electric engine trial, which included crossing the Chenab Bridge, highlighting the near completion of all construction works, with only tunnel No. 1 remaining partially incomplete. This milestone brings the project closer to its goal, with the first train between Sangaldan and Reasi expected to commence on June 30, following the successful trial run.

As the project enters its final stages, the commissioner of railways safety, D C Deshwal, is scheduled to conduct a two-day inspection of the 46-kilometre Sangaldan-Reasi section on June 27 and 28. Northern Railway’s chief public relations officer, Deepak Kumar, assured that all necessary work would be completed before the inspection, ensuring a smooth transition towards operational status.

The USBRL project is more than just an engineering feat; it is a lifeline that will bring enhanced connectivity and economic growth to the region. The Chenab Rail Bridge, with its towering presence and strategic importance, stands as a beacon of progress. And the dream of connecting Kashmir with the rest of India by rail is on the verge of becoming a reality.
