Officially announcing the production of “Shrek 5,” scheduled for July 1, 2026, DreamWorks Animation Original performers Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will play their parts again. Antonio Banderas’ comeback as Puss in Boots is yet unknown, though.
Walt Dohrn, who has worked on past Shrek movies and portrayed Rumpelstiltskin in “Shrek Forever After,” will oversee “Shrek 5.” Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri will produce the movie; Brad Ableson will be co-director.
In June Eddie Murphy said he had already begun voice recording “Shrek 5” and hinted at a potential Donkey spinoff film. “We started doing [‘Shrek 5’] months ago,” Murphy told Collider. “We will wrap it this year; I recorded the first act. “Shrek” is on release, and Donkey will feature in his own film.”
Beginning in 2001, the “Shrek” series made DreamWorks Animation a major studio with the first movie generating $487 million worldwide and winning the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Grossing $928 million, “Shrek 2” competed for the Palle d’Or at Cannes. Though movies drew less praise, “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After” nonetheless made $813 million and $252 million globally respectively. Combing $555 million and $484 million, the “Puss in Boots” spinoffs were likewise hit.
In 2018, Universal Pictures assigned Chris Meledandri, producer of the “Despicable Me” series and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” to revive the “Shrek” and “Puss in Boots” franchises. Meledandri underlined the need of preserving the original voice performances since he thinks they are fundamental for the success of the franchise.
