Despite the shorter TV season, this year’s Emmy nominees have caused less controversy and a lot of happiness, especially at FX. The network has an amazing 93 nominations; “Shogun” gets 25 and “The Bear” grabs 23.

Finally given fair respect were critical favorites like FX’s “Reservation Dogs” and “What We Do in the Shadows”. Notably among the mix are “Shogun” performers Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada.

Historic firsts include Lily Gladstone and Kali Reis becoming the first female Indigenous actors nominated for Emmys — Gladstone for “Under the Bridge” and Reis for “True Detective: Night Country.” With D’Pharaoh Won-A-Tai fighting for main actor in a comedy, “Reservation Dogs” got a nomination for best comedy series in its last season.

September 15 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles will see the Emmy Awards ceremony broadcast on ABC.

Notable observations from this year’s nominees include HBO’s lack of heavyweights like “Succession” and “The White Lotus,” which lets Netflix and FX take front stage. Leading with 107 nominations is Netflix; followed by FX with 93. HBO nonetheless received 91 nods, and Apple TV+ stunned with 70 including “The Morning Show” and “Slow Horses.”

Surprising turn of events: Selena Gomez joined co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, who had past recognition, for Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” first best actress nomination.

With its “The Morning Show,” which tackles relevant topics such corporate hacking and the aftermath of the Jan. 6 revolt, Apple TV+ received first outstanding drama nominations. While Jon Hamm, Billy Crudup, and Mark Duplass contest in the supporting actor category, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon are both up for lead actress. Among the supporting actress nominations are Holland Taylor, Greta Lee, Karen Pittman, and Nicole Beharie.

Oscar winners generated waves as well. Supporting actor Oscar laureate Robert Downey Jr. for “Oppenheimer” is nominated for HBO’s “The Sympathizer.” Originally winning for “The Holdovers,” Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a guest actress on “Only Murders in the Building.”

Past Emmy winner Claire Foy for “The Crown,” is once more nominated for a guest role. While Olivia Colman, another series star, missed out owing to a technicality, Imelda Staunton, who also stars in “The Crown,” is up for best actress.
