Bovine to be sent back to Palghar home after it gets accustomed to artificial limb

Mumbai:The cow that received an

artificial limb

at BSPCA, Parel, had been brought from

Bombay Gaurakshak Mandali

, Betegaon in

Palghar

last year.
The lower part of its leg was amputated this Feb by Dr Phiroz Khambatta. It took at least three months for the wound to dry and heal completely after which the process of getting the artificial limb was initiated by Dr Mukesh Doshi, orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in

prosthetics

.

Getting the final measurements for the artificial leg involved much back and forth to get the right circumference of the dangling part of the stub of the limb. The cow was born through in-vitro fertilisation in 2019. It is of genetically high value — the semen was brought from Brazil, the eggs from Jamnagar. The cow’s foster mother is from Kandivli, said Colonel Dr K N Yadav, CEO of Bombay Gaurakshak Mandali. In about a month, once the cow gets a bit used to the new part of her body, she will be packed off to her home turf, the cattle shed in Palghar.
