How to get a UK visa and why it can be your ticket to exploring Europe

For many Indians seeking to settle in the UK, acquiring British citizenship is the ultimate goal. UK citizenship offers not only the right to vote and access to healthcare and social benefits but also the security of being a citizen in one of the world’s most stable democracies.

Also it is worth noting that becoming a UK citizen isn’t just about settling down—it can also open doors to endless travel opportunities across Europe. As a British citizen, you’ll gain visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to numerous European destinations.

There are several ways to qualify for British citizenship.

  • Citizenship by birth: This one’s a no-brainer. Children born in the UK automatically acquire citizenship if at least one parent is a British citizen or has settled status.

  • Citizenship by marriage: If you’re married to a British citizen, you can apply for naturalisation after holding permanent residence for three years.

  • Citizenship for those with Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status: Individuals with indefinite leave to remain or EU “settled status” may apply for citizenship once they have maintained this status for 12 months.

Eligibility criteria for UK citizenship

Age requirement: One must be at least 18 years old at the time of applying for a UK citizenship.

Residency period: One should have lived in the UK for at least five years with no absence exceeding 450 days during that period.

Residency period for spouses: If married to a British citizen, you must have resided in the UK for three years with permanent residency.

Good character: You must have a clear criminal record and demonstrate good moral conduct.

English language proficiency: Applicants must pass an English language test at B1, B2, C1, or C2 level.

Life in the UK test: A mandatory test covering British customs, history, and culture.

If you meet these requirements, you can proceed with your application through the following steps:

  • Register for the life in the UK test through the official government website. This certificate will be required when you apply.

  • You must provide details of two referees who can vouch for you as part of your application. You will also need to pass an English test at B1 level or higher. This is to check your language proficiency.

  • The citizenship application form can be accessed on the UK government portal. Fill the form correctly, and upload scans of required documents.

  • Book an appointment with UK Visa and Citizenship Application Services (UKVCAS) to provide biometric data that includes fingerprints and a photograph.

  • Once your application is submitted, and is reviewed by the government, you will be notified whether you have the approval or not. If approved, you can apply for a UK passport.
