How a Drunk Guitarist’s Critique Transformed A.R. Rahman’s Musical Journey

Renowned musician A.R. Rahman recently recounted a pivotal moment in his early career when a bandmate’s candid critique prompted a significant transformation in his musical approach. In an interview with O2 India, Rahman shared that at 19, while collaborating with various composers and participating in a band, a guitarist—under the influence of alcohol—challenged the originality of his work, questioning why he was replicating film music.

This encounter, occurring around 1985-86, deeply impacted Rahman, leading him to recognize the extent to which he had been influenced by the composers he worked with. Determined to establish his unique style, he embarked on a seven-year journey to distance himself from those influences, ultimately reshaping his talent and career.

Rahman emphasized how such critiques, even when delivered bluntly, can resonate deeply and drive personal growth, allowing artists to reconnect with the true essence of their creativity.
