South Indian cinema has often showcased tales of revenge by ghosts, animals, and even snakes across multiple lifetimes. However, for the first time, a dog takes legal revenge in the film “Kooran,” written and directed by debutant Nithin Vempathi.
The film features music by Siddharth Vipin and cinematography by Martin Dhanraj. Veteran actor S.A. Chandrasekaran plays a lawyer who fights for the dog’s justice. The cast also includes Y.G. Mahendran, Sathyan, Balaji Sakthivel, George Maryan, Indhira, and Robo Shankar. Produced by Vicky under Kana Productions in collaboration with V.P. Combines, the film is set to be released by Dream Warriors.
At the trailer launch event, actor-director S.A. Chandrasekaran shared that “Kooran” presents a unique storyline in his 45-year cinema career. The film does not feature a hero, heroine, dance numbers, or duets. Instead, it revolves around a highly intelligent dog that takes a legal stand against injustice.
Chandrasekaran emphasized the responsibility of filmmakers to create films with strong moral messages. He stated that cinema is a powerful medium that can influence young audiences. He also highlighted that this movie avoids traditional violent elements, opting instead for an emotionally compelling narrative.
The film was shot in Kodaikanal in January amidst harsh winter conditions. The storyline intrigued even Menaka Gandhi, who was deeply moved after watching it. “Kooran” is expected to resonate with audiences, especially pet lovers, as it uniquely portrays an animal’s pursuit of justice.
