Agathiya Movie Review: A Comprehensive Analysis and Audience Insights

Film art director Agathiya (Jeeva) invests his own money to transform an old colonial bungalow in Puducherry into a haunted house for a movie. However, when the film gets shelved, he is left clueless about what to do next. His friend Veena (Raashi Khanna) suggests converting it into a ‘Scary House’ attraction, similar to those abroad, to recover his money. The plan works well, drawing large crowds. But soon, they realize the house harbors real secrets and supernatural elements. The rest of the film unfolds the mysteries within.

Director Pa. Vijay blends elements of fantasy horror, period drama, thriller, revenge, traditional medicine, and emotional depth into a mixed-genre film, successfully capturing audience interest. The story shifts between 1940 and the present, offering a commercial movie experience with multiple layers.

The conflict and bond between French officer Edwin Duplex (Edward Sonnenblick) and Siddha doctor Siddharthan (Arjun Sarja) play a crucial role, leading to an unexpected twist. The eerie atmosphere intensifies when Veena plays an antique piano, triggering suspenseful events.

Jeeva delivers a strong performance, but Arjun Sarja, as the Siddha doctor, shines with his subtle yet impactful acting. Edward Sonnenblick as the antagonist, Medilda in romantic scenes, and comic relief from Sha Ra, Radha Ravi, Yogi Babu, and others add variety to the narrative. Emotional moments from Rohini and Charlie also stand out.

Although Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the music, Ilaiyaraaja’s classic “En Iniya Pon Nilavae” steals the show. Deepak Kumar Padhy’s cinematography enhances the film’s visuals, and Shanmuga’s production design is commendable. VFX is effective for the most part, and San Lokesh’s editing keeps the film engaging.

While the film highlights traditional Siddha medicine, it slightly undermines other medical practices. Some love songs and emotional scenes slow the pace. Despite minor flaws, ‘Agathiya’ provides a unique cinematic experience.
