‘The Pride of the Nation’: Ilaiyaraaja on His London Symphony Concert

“The Symphony music concert is not my pride; it is the pride of this nation.” said music composer Ilaiyaraaja. Before leaving for London for the Symphony concert, he shared these thoughts with reporters at the Chennai airport.

Ilaiyaraaja, a leading composer in Tamil cinema, has created his first symphony titled ‘Valiant,’ which will be performed live at the Apollo Theatre in London on March 8. Many political leaders and film personalities have conveyed their best wishes to him for this event.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu Congress leader Selvaperunthagai, TMC leader G.K. Vasan, VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, and MNM leader Kamal Haasan personally visited Ilaiyaraaja to greet him. Additionally, Union Minister L. Murugan and BJP state chief Annamalai also visited his residence yesterday to extend their wishes.

During the visit, Annamalai sought Ilaiyaraaja’s blessings by touching his feet and presented him with a book titled ‘Thiruppudaimarudur Paintings’ as a token of appreciation.

Today (March 6), Ilaiyaraaja arrived at Chennai airport en route to London. Speaking to the media, he expressed his joy, stating, “The Symphony concert will be a grand musical treat for the fans. Just like the fans, I am also excited. Conducting this concert is not my personal pride but the pride of this nation.”

When asked further questions, he responded, “I am going for a good cause. Please avoid unnecessary questions.”
