Porvorim: Given the jump in population and the urban amenities available, govt must categorise
Calangute-Candolim
, and Porvorim as cities, said
Goa Forward Party
MLA
Vijai Sardesai
on Monday.
Speaking in the
Goa legislative assembly
, Sardesai said that if Fatorda can be brought under the Margao Municipal Council jurisdiction, the same rule should be applied to Porvorim and the Calangute-Candolim belt.
“Calangute-Candolim are no longer villages. They are cities. If they are villages, then Fatorda cannot be called a town. We come under the municipality; why not for Calangute and Candolim? The population and growth are huge,” said Sardesai.
He said that govt has already shown a strong inclination towards converting the state’s villages into cities by converting forests into settlement areas.
“Porvorim has reached a stage where the minister Rohan Khaunte wants to create a town square. Is a town square supposed to be in a village?” said Sardesai. He made these remarks in his official reply to the motion of thanks for the governor’s address.
