Director Selvaraghavan recently opened up about the long-awaited sequel to his cult classic Aayirathil Oruvan (2010), revealing that while advancements in technology like AI and affordable VFX have made production easier, the real challenge lies in assembling the right cast and securing their schedules.

The original film, starring Karthi and Parthiban, gained a strong following for its bold storytelling and historical fantasy elements. Several years ago, a sequel—rumored to feature Dhanush—was announced, but updates since then have been sparse.

In a recent interview, Selvaraghavan emphasized that Aayirathil Oruvan 2 cannot be made without Karthi reprising his role. “To return to that world, I need layers of socio-cultural nuance, historical references to the Cholas and Pandyas. It’s not a simple project,” he said.

He added, “We need the right kind of stars, and a one-year call sheet. It can’t be rushed or made just for the sake of it. The vision demands the right budget, the right producers, and a committed team.”

Selvaraghavan acknowledged that while high VFX costs were a barrier back in 2010, modern advancements and AI tools have now made such work more accessible. “Today, Aayirathil Oruvan 2 is technically easier to make. If I can get the cast I’m envisioning and align the schedules, the film will happen,” he assured.

For fans of the original, it’s a hopeful sign that the dream of AO2 isn’t abandoned—it’s just waiting for the perfect storm to come together.
