Filmmaker Pa. Ranjith has made a bold statement against censorship, declaring his intent to screen the banned film ‘Santosh’ despite restrictions from the Censor Board, even if it means facing arrest.

At a recent event in Egmore, Chennai, where globally acclaimed films were showcased, an attempt was made to screen ‘Santosh’, a film directed by British-Indian filmmaker Sandhya Surya. However, the organizers were denied permission due to the film’s ban by the Censor Board of India.

Speaking passionately at the event, Ranjith revealed that police authorities had warned organizers not to screen the film, threatening consequences such as revoking lab rights.

Undeterred, Ranjith responded:

“If we can’t screen Santosh here, we’ll do it elsewhere. We are ready to face the consequences, even arrest. Being in jail will just give me more time to read — that too will be a valuable experience.”

His defiant words have sparked conversation online and within the film community.

The film Santosh, which tackles caste discrimination and sexual violence, has been banned from screening in India despite being screened at prestigious international festivals, including the Oscars circuit. Pa. Ranjith’s stand is being hailed by many as a strong statement in support of artistic freedom and freedom of expression in Indian cinema.
