On October 2, 1988, the TV show Mahabharat premiered on Doordarshan and it became hugely popular, following in the footsteps of Ramayan, and kept viewers entertained and glued to their screens.
It was the first time people could watch Mahabharat in a serialised format on TV, and from the very beginning, it captured their hearts so deeply that they didn’t realise when the 94 episodes ended. The last episode aired on June 24, 1990.
When Mahabharat concluded, it left a void in the lives of its viewers at the time. Directed by B.R. Chopra, all the characters were beloved, especially Draupadi. Interestingly, six actresses were considered for the role of Draupadi, and eventually, two names were shortlisted, one of them was later starred in Baahubali.
Juhi Chawla was one of them but she turned down the role because she had already signed the movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak with Aamir Khan. After that, Rupa Ganguly and actress Ramya Krishnan were finalists for the role. Rupa Ganguly got the role because she spoke Hindi well.
Ramya Krishnan didn’t get the role because of this reason. She had gained a lot of praise for her role as Shivagami Devi in the movie Baahubali. Ramya Krishnan didn’t get the role of Draupadi in Doordarshan’s Mahabharat.
However, she has worked in films in five languages: Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi. Ramya has won the Filmfare Award four times. The 53-year-old actress made her debut in Malayalam film Neeram Pularumbol.
Although it was released late, her first release was actually the Tamil film Vellai Manasu. Ramya has acted in approximately 260 films. She married Krishna Vamsi in 2003, whom she met on the film set.
