Mumbai: In the ongoing
recruitment process
, teachers selected for
semi-English medium schools
will have to undergo a
skill test
to demonstrate proficiency in the English language after being appointed to the job. Last year, the state had decided to recruit
English teachers
in govt schools to increase the enrolment of students and prevent the closure of semi-English and Marathi medium schools.
The recruitment process that began in Sept last year is being done in phases. The first phase for over 21,000 vacancies began in Feb. More than half the number of teachers have joined schools in the 2024-25 academic year. Of these teachers, only those who have been recruited in semi-English medium schools for English will have to give a skill test to be conducted by the regional education authority under the State Educational Research and Training (SCERT).
In the first phase, 1,288 teachers were recommended for semi-English medium schools that have science and mathematics textbooks in English, in addition to the language as a subject. While teachers have questioned the test after being recruited, the state has reasoned that it is to ensure that the quality of English teaching is maintained. According to the state, parents send their children to English medium private schools despite not having the finances. If the English language is offered in govt schools, parents will admit students to these schools.
The govt’s decision to give first preference to a candidate who completed both school and professional education in English had come under criticism from aspirants from non-English educational backgrounds.
