Panaji: Crime branch

superintendent of police, Rahul Gupta, on Wednesday said an inquiry has been ordered against the lady head constable who was found to have misappropriated Rs 13 lakh collected in traffic fines within the jurisdiction of the

Bicholim police station

. She is presently suspended. Gupta also said the misappropriated amount has been deposited back in govt coffers.
The police ordered an inquiry against the lady head constable after the traffic cell found a mismatch of Rs 13 lakh in the fines she had collected by issuing challans to traffic violators and the amount deposited by her in the govt treasury. She was previously attached to the Bicholim police station and was transferred to the escort cell at Colvale last Oct.
The inquiry against the lady constable is presently on by the Bicholim deputy superintendent of police and the Bicholim police inspector. “As per the outcome of the inquiry, further action will be taken,” Gupta said.
Besides the traffic cell, personnel attached to police stations also issue challans to traffic violators and collect fines. These police personnel send the details of challans and amounts to the traffic cell for a final tally.

When the traffic cell was verifying the amounts and challans, it found the lady head constable collected Rs 25 lakh in cash and electronic modes by issuing challans, but only Rs 12 lakh was deposited in the govt treasury.
Ten days ago, the traffic cell brought this to the notice of North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal, and he ordered a detailed inquiry.
