Ten Types of Lamps and Their Blessings:

  1. Mala Deepam (Tiered Lamp): This multi-tiered lamp, when lit, ensures brilliant success in every endeavor. Chanting a mantra 11 times while lighting it is said to bring wealth and prosperity.

  2. Akasa Deepam (Sky Lamp): Lit outside the home in a high place, two lamps are offered. This ritual is believed to grant strength and growth to the men of the household, providing immediate relief from problems.

  3. Jala Deepam (Water Lamp): Placed in water bodies (ponds, tanks), this lamp is offered for ancestors and particularly for Kula Deivam (family deity). It is said to remove the fear of death and bring mental peace. Lighting a five-faced lamp with a green wick and five types of oils is believed to invoke the power of the five elements.

  4. Padagu Deepam (Boat Lamp/Kasi Deepam): This lamp, primarily lit in Kasi in boat-like structures, offers salvation and a good rebirth for ancestors. It is especially significant for men to light this lamp.

  5. Sarva Deepam (Universal Lamp): Lit in rows around the four corners of the house, especially on Karthigai Pournami, this lamp bestows ‘Sarva Vasyam’ (universal attraction). It is believed to remove astrological obstacles and bring all kinds of benefits. Women performing this at home is considered auspicious.

  6. Moksha Deepam (Salvation Lamp): Lit on temple gopurams (towers) for the salvation of saints, sages, and ancestors, this lamp grants liberation to their souls and blessings to us. It is primarily lit by men.

  7. Sarvalaya Deepam: Lit on Karthigai Pournami using red and yellow wicks soaked in Iluppai (Mahua) oil, this lamp bestows Sarva Vasyam and Sarvaloka Vasyam (universal attraction). It is believed that divine energies will not depart from us when this lamp is lit. Furthermore, it protects against physical ailments and accidents.

  8. Akanda Deepam (Continuous Lamp): Similar to the lamp lit at Tiruvannamalai, this large lamp, when lit with five types of oils in a broad lamp using a teak leaf, is believed to bring business attraction and the power to draw people.

  9. Laksha Deepam (Lamp of Lakhs): Lit in lakhs in temples, this lamp is believed to grant direct blessings of Lord Shiva and immense good karma. Ancient temples have dedicated pillars for this purpose.

  10. Mavilakku (Flour Lamp): Made from raw rice flour, jaggery, and tender coconut water, and lit with ghee and cotton thread, this lamp is commonly used in rural areas for Kula Deivam offerings. It is believed to bless women with Sumangalithuvam (marital bliss), a good spouse, flawless progeny, and ancestral property benefits.
